We LOVE Key West and travel here several times a year! There is something magical about this island, sitting at the edge of those perfect blue green waters, and it centers us.

Of course, while we are traveling, we are always looking for ways to make our adventures more affordable! Key West offers some amazing happy hours that include both food and drinks!!!! This is a great way to have dinner on a budget!

Check out our favorite happy hour spots below!

Alonzo's (4:00 to 6:30 daily)

Located at the Historic Seaport, Alonzo’s has happy hour throughout the restaurant every day from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. Their extensive HH menu includes something for everyone! Drinks range from wine and wells to beer and the Key West Favorite, the Key Lime Colada! You can fill up on foods here also! With over a dozen tapas on special (50% off!), there is something for every palate! Our favorites include the Warm Crab & Shrimp Dip, Fried Fish Bites and Soft Pretzel with Beer Cheese. They have the island’s best selection of oysters also, with several of them included in the Happy Hour Pricing.

Bagatelle (4:00 to 6:00 daily)

Located near the beginning of Duval Street (at 115 Duval), Bagatelle offers *TWO* Happy Hour events every day, the breakfast hangover happy hour from 9:00 to 11:30 am and the afternoon happy hour from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The former highlights small-plate style breakfast offerings. The (more popular) afternoon happy hour is at the bar (go upstairs and all the way to the back) and features $5 tasting plates and half off most cocktails. The lobster mac & cheese is rave-worthy! You’re welcome!!!

Boathouse Bar & Grill (4:00 to 6:30 daily)

Popular among locals and tourists alike, Boat House Bar & Grill is a Key West favorite! Small plates are all half off — make sure to get the bread and the lobster tempura, plus whatever else looks good! Honestly, we don’t have any complaints about the happy hour menu!!!!! Draft beer and select cocktails are also BOGO. Be sure to arrive early to get a seat (it gets BUSY here!) and prepare to be wowed!

First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery (4:00 to 6:00 daily)

First Flight is located at the corner of Whitehead and Caroline Streets. The building that it’s located in once housed Pan American World Airways, which sold tickets out of this building AND the airway took it’s first flight from Key West to Havana in 1927!!!! Their Happy Hour is indeed happy!  Featuring their house-made beer, other drink options include cocktails on tap, and house wines. The food specials are delicious and enough to fill up on!

Half Shell Raw Bar (4:30 to 6:30 daily)

This Key West restaurant is off the beaten path, but close to everything that the historic seaport has to offer! If you’re looking for a waterfront happy hour with an old-school Key West vibe that features a seafood focused menu, this is it! Half Shell Raw Bar features discounted oysters, clams, shrimp, and various other types of seafood. Draft beer to wash it down will set you back as little as $3. Food & Wine Magazine recognized Half Shell for having the best local oysters, so we recommend trying a dozen here!

Moondog Café (4:30 to 6:30 daily)

Situated across the street from the Hemmingway House, Moondog Café is fun to visit any time of the day, but is particularly fun during happy hour! From the murals to the plants, décor, and delicious food, this funky café has a great atmosphere! Happy hour runs daily from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, and includes discounted beer, wine and sangria as well as small plates for $8 or less! Be sure to try the avocado caprese!

Old Town Mexican Café (4:00 to 6:30 daily)

At some point you will have your fill of seafood, and will look for something a little different for happy hour! Old Town Mexican Café on Duval Street will fit this bill. Their happy hour is great, with half off beer, margaritas, and appetizers! The Old Town Nachos are really good and big enough to share. As hoped from a Mexican restaurant, the margaritas are amazing! Stop here for a refreshing happy hour!

Pepe’s Café (4:00 to 6:00 daily)

As the oldest eatery in Key West, Pepe’s is worth a stop just for the history! Still a local’s place, word is getting out about the great happy hour that Pepe’s hosts! $6 Margaritas (made with fresh-squeezed juice) and half-price oysters are the big draw here! Enjoy this as a first stop if you’re “happy hour hopping” or spend an early evening slurping down oysters and margs!

Rams Head Southernmost (M-F 4:00 to 7:00)

Located at Bahama Village Market (in the former Blue Macaw), Rams Head Southernmost offers a great happy hour in an outdoor setting with good music! Half-priced apps and drinks alone make it worth trekking off the beaten path to this gem! Our favorites are the Tuna Boats and the Key West Pinks! Wash it down with a cold beer, and this is a delightful evening!

Santiago’s Bodega (3:00 to 6:00 daily)

A hidden gem located off the beaten path in Bahama Village, Santiago’s Bodega is worth the effort of getting to! They have the best sangria on the island, on tap, and it’s discounted during happy hour! In addition, they offer several $5 tapas, which change regularly. We have never been disappointed any of the happy hour offerings that we’ve sampled here! Locals may prefer to keep this great spot a secret, but the word is out!!!

Southernmost Beach Café (4:00 to 6:00 daily)

We love the relaxing vibe of this open-air restaurant as well as the great view of the Atlantic! Southernmost Beach Cafe’s happy hour menu is not as extensive as some others (and it changes often), but it offers something for everyone! When they are available, we love the fish sliders and the wings! Beer, wine, and wells are also discounted as you watch the sun make its slow descent towards the horizon.

Those are our favorite happy hour spots in Key West, Florida! Are you hungry?! Us too!!!!! Want to check out other awesome eats and adventures? Please head over to our Facebook page, like it, and follow along on our adventures, which will help you to plan your adventures!!!!

3 Perfect Days in Asheville, NC https://leskoexplore.com/3-perfect-days-in-asheville-nc/ Wed, 01 Jun 2022 19:49:36 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=559

(We recognize that Asheville is still recovering from the destruction of 2024, and some of these locations are not currently open. We look forward to Asheville and the surrounding area making a recovery, and can’t wait to visit again soon and support the local economy!)

Originally written in late Summer 2022.

We just came back from another amazing long weekend in Asheville, NC! For years, we have made the journey there at least once a year, if not 2-3 times…. It never gets old! We are still reviewing the photos and reveling in the relaxing magic of that beautiful mountain town.

Asheville is the perfect combination of small town, small city, beer city, and outdoor sports mecca! It combines all of these things so effortlessly, allowing you to feel like a part of the community almost immediately, all while eating award-winning food, sipping delicious beer, and heading on outdoor adventures every day!

Read on for the perfect three-day itinerary!

Blue Ridge Parkway

Day 1: Gourmet Chips, Highland Brewery, Lexington Glassworks, Chai Pani, Shindig on the Green & Wicked Weed!

Plan on getting into town around lunchtime. Even if you can’t check into your hotel yet, there is plenty for you to see and do on foot! Start your trek at The Gourmet Chip Company. We love the Buffalo and/or the Cajun Chips! Take them to go and make your way to The S&W Market, on Patton Ave. The S&W is Asheville’s newest food hall and is home to Highland Brewery’s Downtown Taproom. When you enter, there is a bar on the left and another one upstairs. Grab a beer, open a tab, and check out the menus of the various food stalls. Our favorite is Bun Intended, but each vendor has amazing eats! Once you chow down, head upstairs, grab one more beer, and find a relaxing seat to plan out your day! We will give you some great recommendations, but there is some flexibility in today’s “around town” day!

Highland Brewing Taps

With some delicious food and beer in your belly, it’s time to head to Lexington Glassworks and see the masters at work! Lexington Glassworks is a Studio and Gallery — you can watch professionals making beautiful blown-glass creations, peruse already completed works, and buy something to support the studio. We love taking time out of our day to stop in and watch these artists display their talents and see all of the new items in the gallery. You will not believe the delicacy and intricateness of some of the pieces.

Lexington Glassworks Mural

Biltmore Avenue is home to a number of cute little shops — art, outdoors, and otherwise — for you to relax and stroll. If you want to try the most delicious chocolate, we recommend French Broad Chocolate Lounge for some amazing, delicate, fresh made chocolate (you will not find anything better!). You may even be able to take a tour of their facility, if available! Alternatively, you can head to the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar for a bottle of wine and a charcuterie board. The Book Exchange is a used book store, complete with seating areas throughout, and you can enjoy your snack nestled in a far off corner of the building, surrounded by thousands of books. The Book Exchange also hosts live music outside on the weekends. Be sure to check their schedule online.

This might be a good time to check into your hotel and freshen up! You still have a whole evening ahead of you 🙂

Head to Chai Pani for your first dinner in Asheville! Be sure to join the wait list on Yelp’s app ahead of time and opt for an outside table, if available. Constantly rated among the top restaurants in Asheville, we have never had a disappointing dish here! Our favorites, however, are the Aloo Tiki Chaat, Butter Chicken Thali, and the Mixed Vegetable Uttapam.

Chai Pani Butter Chicken Thali

After dinner, head across downtown along College Street to Pack Square Park for Shindig on the Green! Having just completed its 55th season, this Shindig happens every Saturday evening in the summer “along about sundown” (7 p.m.) and concludes around 10 p.m. This is one of our absolute favorite things to do when we are in Asheville! This tradition includes bluegrass and string bands, dancers, cloggers, storytellers, and more. This show is the essence of the mountains of Western North Carolina and is not to be missed! Bring a chair or blanket and a cooler with drinks. There are concessions available also.

If you’d like a nightcap before heading back to your hotel, consider Wicked Weed Brewing. They have an eclectic mix of beers, including a long list of IPAs and sours. Grab a beer and relax around their large outdoor firepit in the courtyard. They also have a Funkatorium a few blocks away, which is almost exclusively sours, and not to be missed if that’s more to your liking.

Wicked Weed Lower Bar

Day 2: Biscuit Head, Zen Tubing, New Belgium & Curate!

Start your day with breakfast from Biscuit Head! Of course, be sure to get *something* that is in or on or includes one of their house-made delicious biscuits! For dine in, we recommend the biscuit and gravy “flight.” When you’re in beer city, you have to try all of the flights, even the non-alcohol, right?!?! (Spoiler, the gravy flight is amazing!!!) If you’re not an early riser, you can order delivery straight to your hotel from their website! This is what we usually opt for so we can start our morning a little more relaxed.

Pack a bag with sunscreen, hats, and sun shirts… Pack a cooler with beer, water, and snacks… and head to Zen Tubing! You can rent tubes from them, making this an easy and fun outdoor activity! (They even have a “cooler tube” if your cooler is on the larger side!) We recommend the South Asheville Location — it is a bit more nature-filled and even has rocks in the river where you can pull-off to have a snack, drink, impromptu yoga session, or just a bit of stationary “sun therapy!” The float lasts about 2.5 hours (without stops and dependent on water level).

Family Tubing

Once back at their base, rinse off and change for the next part of your day! It’s off to New Belgium Brewing for some lunch and libations! New Belgium hosts a rotating lineup of food trucks, all of which we have found to be delicious! The taproom opens at noon on Thursday through Monday, and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Please accordingly. Our favorite way to experience New Belgium is a flight at a time. With almost 30 beers on tap, we have found that a series of 5 oz. pours to be the best way to find our favorite beer on each trip to the Brewery!

New Belgium Brewing

A great pit stop on your way back to Asheville is Second Gear. This outdoor gear store offers used items on consignment as well as new gear to prepare for your next adventure! We have loved Second Gear since they opened their doors, many moons ago! Have bought kayaks, a bike trainer, several pairs of Chacos, paddles for our tubing adventures, and sundry other items from this gem of a shop!

Time to head back to your hotel, take a nap, clean up, put on your “fancy clothes,” and head to Curate! (Their website does state no dress code, but we prefer to dress up for this fancy meal – it makes the night a bit more fun and special!) Arguably one of the best dining experiences in Asheville, Curate serves up magnificent tapas style plates as well as amazing wines! The atmosphere in the restaurant is comfortable and the servers are attentive, making this a perfect “date night” splurge! Standouts on the menu include the pimientos de piquillo rellenos (goat cheese stuffed peppers), gambas al ajillo (sauteed shrimp in sherry), and trucha al horno (charcoal grilled trout). Reservations are required, so be sure to make them well in advance. If you don’t have reservations, you can still try to get there early and snag a last minute table or bar space.

Day 3: Sunny Point Café, Dupont State Forest & Sierra Nevada Brewing

Rise and Shine, you’re heading to Dupont State Recreational Forest today! You can “do” Dupont a few different ways — hiking, biking, or a combo of hiking and swimming!!! We love to spend the day at Dupont, relaxing at the base of High Falls, swimming in the deep plunge pools, eating brie and chips, drinking beer, and enjoying the great outdoors! If you choose this way, be sure to pack a cooler (don’t forget water also!), water shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and maybe a hammock and small towel (we use microfiber pack towels; check out our Gear Post for more info on must-have gear!)

Runway Bike Trail

Start with breakfast on your way out of town at Sunny Point Café — be prepared for a wait, but the food is worth it! This cute diner is consistently rated among the top breakfast spots in Asheville!!!! My favorite menu item, hands down, at Sunny Point, is the Huevos Rancheros! This flavor explosion will fill you up for a day of hiking and swimming! Pair with a mimosa if you’re so inclined!

Next, you’ll be off to Dupont. Don’t forget to stop at Ingles if you need to top off your cooler. It seems like there is an Ingles Grocery Store every 5 miles around Asheville! Pop it into your GPS and go to the nearest one to grab some lunch-y snacks! Dupont State Forest is about an hour from Asheville. Your ride will take you through small towns and gently rolling mountain valleys. We like to stop at the Visitor Center to check out the relief map of the area, use the restrooms, and make any final changes to our plans for the day. You could hike from here to several waterfalls, but this location is on the top of the mountain… which means you will be hiking UP the mountain to get back to your car at the end of the day!

Dupont Waterfall

From here, we drive to the Hooker Falls Access Area / Triple Falls Parking. If you’ve never been here before, take the quick jaunt out the Hooker Falls Road to Hooker Falls, a wide, full waterfall with a large, deep swimming pool at the bottom. Due to its proximity to the parking area, this swimming hole fills up quickly on a nice day. Head back along the path you came and make a right onto Triple Falls Trail. This trail follows the Little River. Be sure to take a closer look at Triple Falls by following the path from the Triple Falls Shelter down to the river and walking along the rocky bottom up along the falls.

Triple Falls

When you’re ready to move further upriver, take the path back to Triple Falls Shelter (there is a port-a-potty here seasonally for hiker use), make a left back onto Triple Falls Trail and another left onto High Falls Trail. You’ll basically continue following the river as you make a bit of elevation gain. Make one more left onto River Bend Trail, which will take you to the base of High Falls. If you’re feeling adventurous, look for a place to cross the river as your approach the falls. We love to spend the afternoon on the rocky outcropping on the far side of the river. There is a deep pool at the base of the falls, which is great for swimming! Do not attempt this if the river is high, as the water can become dangerous.

High Falls Waterfall

After enjoying this beautiful afternoon surrounded by nature, swimming in the brisk mountain water, and sunning on the warm rocks, it’s time to head back to your vehicle! Return via the same path that brought you here. We like to carry a gallon or two of water in our vehicle to rinse off at the end of an adventure like this! Change out of your swimsuit and set your GPS for Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.

Sierra Nevada purchased land behind the Asheville Airport and built a beautiful facility. In addition to their sprawling building, which houses the restaurant, brewing facility, and gift shop, the grounds also include rocking chairs, benches, an amphitheater, a hiking path, and a garden. There are solar car chargers and bike maintenance stations. Reservations are currently required for dining at a table (via Open Table), but you can also choose to sit at the bar or grab a snack from their smaller outside kitchen, aptly named The Back Porch.

Sierra Nevada

In the past, there have been auxiliary bars overlooking the kitchens, where guests can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of food prep and see all of the delicious dishes coming out of the kitchen! Those are closed right now (sad face!). On this trip, we chose to sit at the bar, which was open seating, and have a drink and an appetizer. Sierra Nevada is another place with so many beers to try that it’s best to start with a flight (or two!) Once you find “your” beer, you can get a pint of that! Standouts on the food menu include the Pretzel & Beer Cheese, any of the Woodfire Pizzas and Denver Steak. The Duck Fat Fries have a lot going on, they are different, but definitely worth trying!!!

Sierra Nevada Fries and Beer

Once you’ve had your fill of food and drinks, be sure to spend some time sipping a beer on the expansive back porch. This is a beautiful space at Sierra Nevada and not to be missed! If the self-guided tours are back open, spend a bit of time following their informational displays and learning a bit more about this brewery! Before you leave, grab a crowler (can/growler) to enjoy back at your hotel.

We hope you enjoyed this action packed three days in Asheville and Western North Carolina! There is so much more to see and do, that you’ll have plenty of reasons to come back again and again!!!

Ultimate Ears Boom 3 – Travel Review https://leskoexplore.com/ultimate-ears-boom-3/ Sun, 07 Nov 2021 18:03:31 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=544 Whether we are packing for a relaxing vacation or crazy adventure, we always include a speaker in our gear. Over the years we have been through many speakers both small and midsized. We have found varying levels of success and happiness with them over the years. More often than not, those speakers come to a sad end when they cannot hold up to our adventures. The UE Boom 3 might be the best all-around adventure speaker that we have found so far!

The Ultimate Ears Boom 3 is a lightweight cylindrical speaker, the size of a tall soda can. The protective fabric encasing the speaker is the same quality as bike jackets and fire equipment. The speaker can be submerged 1 meter for 30 minutes, but it can float, so it’s unlikely that it will be underwater for that long. The battery life can keep this speaker “booming” for up to 15 hours depending on your settings. The audio is projected 360 degrees outward from the Boom 3 with the ability to adjust EQ from the app.

The Boom 3 has been a great addition to our adventures and has survived water, drops, and more during those trips. If you are looking for a speaker that can withstand every adventure, from the beach, to the river or mountains, to relaxing by the pool, keep reading to see its robust features and uses.

How is the UE BOOM 3 built?

This speaker is comfortable to carry around in your hand. As you can see from the dimensions, it feels like you’re carrying a large energy drink can. This also means it is easy to slip into any cup holder like those on your backpack, folding chair, kayak, and more. They even sell mounts to attach it to your mountain bike! The built in loop at the top allows you to attach a small carabiner, rope, etc. to further secure your speaker.

The UE BOOM 3 website claims it is virtually indestructible and you can tell by the build that it can withstand drops, dings, etc. I was not brave enough to purposely drop our new speaker, but I feel like it could survive falling off a tailgate or a boat console. If you want to be extra safe with your UE BOOM 3 during travels, you can buy a case for it. We found this one that holds the speaker, charging dock, and the plug plus wire. It does take up more space, but I like the peace of mind while traveling that it will get to my travel destination and I will have all the right cables to charge it.

The UE BOOM 3 was built with IP67 water and dustproof rating. This was the main reason we purchased this speaker because we are always on the water — tubing, kayaking, or on a boat. This speaker can be submerged for 30 minutes and even better… it floats! I like knowing I can fish the speaker out of the water and have a greater chance to recover a fully functional speaker.

Does the UE BOOM 3 have a microphone?

The UE BOOM 3 does not have a built in microphone. When we were looking for a new speaker, this was not a deal breaker to have this feature. I can see the benefit of a microphone while you are tending a campfire or laying on the beach soaking up the sun. But for us, the other features of this speaker far outweighed the lack of a microphone.

What Bluetooth capabilities does the UE BOOM 3 have?

If you have a Bluetooth capable device, it is more than likely you should be able to connect the BOOM 3 to it. We were able to connect this speaker to our old Microsoft Surface 3 laptop to watch movies while on the Amtrak Auto Train. The typical connection will be from an Android or Apple phone, both of which have a downloadable app in their respective app stores.

The app that accompanies this speaker has the ability to turn on your speaker even when it is fully powered off. Your phone can also control the audio level to the speaker if you don’t feel like getting up to use the buttons on the speaker itself. The app can also change the speaker to different EQ settings depending on what you are listening too. This is helpful when you are having a dance party and want to rock the bass, listening to some chill music and want the perfect sound experience, or listening to a Podcast and want to focus on the presenter’s voice.

The BOOM 3 can also allow you to “party up” (aka link together) with up to 50 other nearby speakers. In my research, I found a couple that bought 10 of these speakers and hung them around their wedding venue to save money on music. Eventually, I would like to get several more to make outdoor movie nights even better.

How is the battery life on the UE BOOM 3?

Ultimate Ears BOOM 3 website says you can get 15 hours on a single charge. I have not personally run the speaker that long without charging. We have had the speaker going for around 6 hours while at the pool without having to charge it. They do note that battery life will vary with the different settings and environmental conditions. I would not expect the battery to last a full 15 hours if you are blasting it on a very chilly day.

This speaker and dock are charged by a Micro-USB. We plan on keeping this speaker for years to come and it frustrates me when innovative companies like UE do not utilize the USB Type-C ports. The charging port is recessed, which helps keep it waterproof, but I was worried about damaging the port whenever I want to charge it. This led me to purchasing the dock.

You can purchase a dock separately for under $40 at the time of this posting. I had never seen this type of three prong connection to the base of the speaker before, but it works every time. There are several reasons that I think the dock is a much needed accessory. The most important reason is to take care of the speaker and the waterproof port cover. Our last speaker, that we had for years, would not charge properly because of all the times I had plugged it in to charge. Additionally, you won’t have to fumble with the cable after a long trip or a day at the pool, all you have to do is set it on the dock. You can even keep the speaker on the dock while using it for music.

How does the UE BOOM 3 sound?

The UE BOOM 3 houses two 2-inch drivers and two 2-inch by 4-inch passive radiators. This little speaker can project the audio a great distance with still sounding clear. This speaker doesn’t have a very deep booming bass, but we do not look for that in our speakers. It does get a lot louder than our previous speaker and we have never felt like we had to go over half volume with the Boom.

We have used this speaker in varying sized spaces; from the confines of a small Amtrak Auto Train room to the wide open vastness of the beach. The audio has been really impressive at any location that we have used this speaker. Changing the EQ to “voices” helps a lot when we listen to podcasts as a family. I was impressed with the sound quality for the “standard” EQ setting while playing Country or 80’s music. You can really take control of how your music sounds with this app!

Should you get the UE BOOM 3?

The UE BOOM 3 is a great speaker to enhance any of your upcoming adventures. The speaker size allows you to have great audio quality without the bulk of a larger speaker, hence keeping it from being a burden to carry. If you need a speaker that can withstand the elements, then this speaker might be what you are looking for!

For the price I would even consider buying this for family and friends that do not have a Bluetooth speaker. It would be fun to connect our speakers when we are together to further expand our music over the venue.

The UE BOOM 3 is great for camping, beach, water adventures, and more!

That wraps up the perfect three days in Northern Florida exploring some magnificent springs! Please head over to our Facebook page, like it, and follow along on our adventures, which will help you to plan your adventures!!!! Happy Trails!!!

Best Happy Hours in Cocoa Beach & Cape Canaveral https://leskoexplore.com/best-happy-hours-in-cocoa-beach-cape-canaveral/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 16:27:36 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=664 You made it to the Space Coast, now what?! If you’re like me, you want to know where all of the best food and drinks are! Having lived on and visited the Space Coast for years now, I have tons of experience!

A little background; Prior to the 1960’s, Cocoa Beach was a sleepy little surf town. Ron Jon had their store in a shack where the Cocoa Beach Pier sits today. In the 1960’s, the area exploded when NASA starting building up the Kennedy Space Center. Today it is an eclectic mix of small town surf culture, space junkies, and nature lovers. This translates into some great happy hours and varied food offerings!

I have compiled a list of my favorite Happy Hours in Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral that have food specials as well! Please take some time to explore these great local businesses while you’re on your Space Coast Adventure!

Best Views during Happy Hour: Squid Lips Overwater Grill

Located in South Cocoa Beach, Squid Lips Overwater Grill has a daily happy hour that features domestic drafts, wines, and wells. They also have a daily special, available after 4 p.m. We LOVE going for the Mountain of Shrimp on a Tuesday! It easily feeds 2 people. Pair this with a few happy hour beers, and it’s the perfect dinner on a budget! Sit on the back patio and enjoy the water lapping along the shoreline and the sunset over the Banana River!

Best Outdoor Space: 4th Street Fillin Station (M-F 3-6)

4th Street Fillin Station is located inside of an old gas station at the edge of downtown Cocoa Beach! They have a cool bar concept as well as a great “back yard” area. Happy hour here features some drafts and wells as well as a few “snacks”. We love the pretzel and popcorn, the great craft beers that they carry, as well as their crazy dessert menu! While dessert is not a part of the happy hour menu, it is worth checking out and indulging in!!! Their current happy hour menu can be found here!

Best Food and Wine: Florida’s Fresh Grill (Su-Th 4:30-6)

Florida Fresh Happy Hour Food

Florida’s Fresh Grill is consistently ranked among the top restaurants on the Space Coast! It is great for a date night or a nice family dinner. What many people may not realize is that they have an amazing happy hour here also! Specials are at the bar and the high top tables in the bar area only. Our go-to happy hour foods are the Smoked Fish Dip and the Corvina Dish. We also love the Grouper Bites and the Chicken Caesar Salad! Their Lobster Bisque (not a happy hour special) is one of the best I’ve had! For drinks, we usually go with a few tall glasses of the house Cabernet Sauvignon, but the bartenders also make great mixed drinks if you’re in the mood for that!

Best Laid-Back Location: Long Doggers (M-F 2-6)

Long Doggers Building Front

Long Doggers Cocoa Beach embodies the chill vibe of the Space Coast! They have several locations, all with a tiki or porch area filled with picnic style tables, as well as an indoor, air conditioned section. They feature Hatteras Red Lager, a local brew, for $2.50 a glass, as well as daily specials on Loaded Chips, Boneless Wings, Shrimp, Fish Dip, and other items. Check here for their current happy hour menu!

Best Eclectic Food Options: Preacher Bar (M-F 3-6)

Preacher Bar Happy Hour Food

Preacher Bar is located in a small plaza on A1A between Cocoa Beach and Port Canaveral. It features community seating in a relaxed bar and dining area. Happy hour includes a selection of discounted appetizers and a buck off drinks. We love the Bang Bang Shrimp, and their Scotch Eggs are to die for!

Best Craft and Local Beer Options: Rising Tide Tap & Table (4-6 daily)

Rising Tide Tap & Table has a great happy hour! Located in Port Canaveral, it’s easy to get to, has ample parking, and has a ton of indoor and outdoor seating options. Sitting in the bar area or on the patio, you have a great view of Exploration Tower and the Florida Sunset! Happy hour includes a handful of plates, which change regularly. We currently love the Due South Pimento! Old favorites include the nachos and sliders! Their drink specials are great also; sangria, margaritas, and frozen drinks as well as beer, wine, and wells. This is a great spot to start your evening! Current happy hour menu can be found here.

Best Vacation Vibe: Ellie Mae’s Tiki Bar (W-F 2-5)

Ellie Mae’s is a vibe! Old biker bar turned into fun tiki hangout! Happy hour features $5 tiki drinks and a rotating $5 happy hour bite! Possibilities for the bites include potstickers, sliders, hot dogs, and other items. The best place to stay up to date with their offerings is their Facebook page!

Best BBQ & Drink Selection: Big Daddy J’s 5 Great Things Watering Station & Restaurant (Daily 3-6 & 9:30-close)

Quite possibly our new favorite local happy hour (and the longest restaurant name we’ve ever seen, lol!), Big Daddy J’s has great food and drink specials and an extended happy hour! A page of drinks, with something for everyone, for five bucks, as well as pork, chicken, or brisket sliders for under $5 each, make this a must visit happy hour on the Space Coast!

South Florida to Key West in a day!!! https://leskoexplore.com/south-florida-to-key-west-in-a-day/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 14:29:29 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=571 Whether you fly into Miami or Ft Lauderdale (we prefer Ft Lauderdale personally) or you drive from elsewhere in the US, the drive from South Florida through the Keys and into Key West is amazing, beautiful, and one not to be missed!

This is easily one of our top five favorite drives! As you cross over into the upper Keys, the traffic slows… the blue sky… the sunshine… the beautiful water… all of it combines to relax you into the Keys mentality. The drive through the Keys has been known to take a day, a few days, a week, or a lifetime! Once you’re in the Keys, you’re on Island Time! Relax, Go Slow, and don’t stress about the clock or the agenda!

7 Mile Bridge

However you arrive in South Florida, the first step is to set your compass south, via the FL Turnpike, towards Florida City. (You can order a Sunpass ahead of time if you want to avoid the cash toll lines along the drive.) When you get to the end of the Turnpike, make a Right onto West Palm Drive and head to Robert is Here Fruit Stand for an amazing smoothie, as well as some fresh fruit and boiled peanuts to keep you satiated on the drive south! Get right back on the road, heading due south for Key West.

Your first (and likely only) navigational decision on your roadtrip will be which way to get to Key Largo — US 1 or Card Sound. If you choose Card Sound, be sure to have some cash in your wallet (a good decision in the Keys anyways). Your first official stop in the Florida Keys will be at Alabama Jacks! An old-school dive bar, Alabama Jacks is the perfect introduction to your Florida Keys adventure! Located on a canal, seating is outdoors, either covered or uncovered. Grab a drink and take a deep breath. Enjoy the music, the vibe, the views. Order the conch fritters if you’re feeling munchy, you’ll thank me later!

Back on the road, head through Key Largo, connecting back up with US-1. This is the only road through the rest of the Keys! As you head south, stop at Marker 88 for lunch (MM88 Bayside). This is a toes in the sand and a gorgeous water view type of place – laid back and beautiful, this is the Keys vibe that you’re looking for! Grab a drink and order a bit of food. Standouts here include the Hot Blue Crab Dip and the Blackened Tuna Sashimi.

Pocket ocean views, such as below, dot the Islamorada coastline!

Islamorada

Next, it’s off to the Tiki Bar at Three Waters Resort & Marina. Legend has it that this is the birthplace of the Rum Runner, and we can attest to their Rum Runner and Rum Punch being some of the best we’ve had! Located Oceanside, the views of the blue ocean, as well as boats coming and going from the marina, make this a place that you could spend an afternoon at. However, you have many miles to go!!!

Your last stop in Islamorada is at Robbie’s to hand feed the Tarpon. This is a must-do for anyone who has not been to the Keys before, or who has not fed tarpon! These giant fish, sometimes over five feet long, have been “trained” by so many people feeding them at this location, and they will practically jump out of the water for your hand-fed snacks! Be sure somebody has a camera ready for that moment that the tarpon has his gaping mouth open at your hand!!!

Be sure to make a quick stop in Marathon for a slice of Deep Fried Key Lime Pie and boat watching at Burdine’s. This is one of our favorite stops on our Southernmost Trek! Coupled with some of their addicting french fries, this is a perfect mid-afternoon snack stop!

Burdines Seafood and French Fries

Cross over Seven Mile Bridge (wave to Fred the tree and his little partner Wilma on the old bridge!) and make a quick stop at Bahia Honda State Park to dip your toes in the water and learn a little history about all these bridges that you’re crossing!!! There aren’t words to describe the beauty of this State Park!

Bahia Honda State Park beach view with umbrella

Make a quick detour on Big Pine Key to No Name Pub, “a nice place if you can find it!” Watch out for Key Deer as you make your way through the small streets and back to this hidden gem! No Name Pub has a storied history, including a bait and tackle, a general store, a brothel, a gambling hall, and intermingled later, a pub and eatery. Stop in, grab a beer (and a Keys-famous pizza if you’re hungry!), and tack a dollar to the wall!

No Name Pub

Keep heading south (you’re getting closer)!  Grab dinner at Hogfish Bar & Grill on Stock Island. It’s tucked away and takes a bit of navigating to find it, but it’s so worth it! We recommend the Lobster Bisque and any of the Hogfish dishes! Of course, a margarita rounds it out nicely 🙂 Once back in the car, you’re only about 10 minutes from Key West! Park your car and enjoy the rest of your trip!!!

Hogfish Sandwich at Hogfish Bar & Grill

While we have noted a few of our favorite “must stop” suggestions here, the length of the Florida Keys has so much more to offer! Please head over to our Facebook page, like it, and follow along on our adventures, which will help you to plan your adventures!!!! Be sure to also check out our longer articles on a bunch of these towns and islands for more detailed info on each! Happy trails!

Best Key Lime Pie in Key West! https://leskoexplore.com/best-key-lime-pie-in-key-west/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 13:54:50 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=642

The Florida Keys are special for a thousand reasons, and one of them is their famous dessert – the Key Lime Pie! With heavy input from our in-house dessert expert, Brianna, we have assembled our favorite Key Lime Pie spots in Key West, the birthplace of the Key Lime Pie!

Every restaurant and baker has their own take on this delicious treat – below a few that we have tried and love!

Mattheessen’s

Key Lime Pie on a Stick from Mattheessen's

Mattheessen’s has a unique slice of key lime pie dipped in chocolate. Be forewarned, though, this slice is VERY chocolatey. The key lime pie itself is very good, but it almost gets lost in the chocolate. If you’re a chocolate lover, however, make sure to make Mattheessen’s a stop on your next Key West adventure! They also serve good ice cream and massive cookies!

Moondog Café

Key Lime Pie Slice at Moondog

Moondog Café has so much great food, and their key lime pie is no exception! With a great presentation, this is one of our favorite pies! We all love how well the meringue compliments the pie. This pie is the perfect blend of not too sweet, not too tart, and it is the perfect end to your meal at this cute restaurant!

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe

Kermit's Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe features a very traditional key lime pie; a bit on the limey side and tart. While this pie doesn’t have a crazy unique twist or spin, if you’re looking for a traditional key lime pie, this would be a great choice! Kermit’s pies have been featured on the Food Network, Today Show, Good Morning America, Travel Channel, and a host of other media outlets!

Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven Whole Key Lime Pie

It’s impossible to talk about key lime pie in Key West without mentioning Blue Heaven! Their pie has songs and stories written about it! With meringue a mile high, this pie is a stand-out among key lime pies anywhere! And the vibe in Blue Heaven is pure Key West! Be sure to stop here for a Lobster Benedict and a slice of Key Lime Pie!!!

While this list is far from exhaustive, we strive to update it with each trip to the Keys. We try more pies each time we go and may eventually name our favorite! For now, when Brianna is asked which is her favorite, this is her response: “It’s a hard question — each pie is good for different reasons!”

Those are our favorite Key Lime Pie spots in Key West, Florida! Like what you read? Please head over to our Facebook page, like it, and follow along on our adventures, which will help you to plan your adventures!!!!

3 Perfect Days at the Springs of North Florida https://leskoexplore.com/3-perfect-days-at-the-springs-of-north-florida/ Thu, 21 Oct 2021 21:40:28 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=592

Having grown up in Pennsylvania, I knew of mountain streams being brisk and beautiful. I never imagined back then that I would find crystal clear waters flowing from the earth and forming whole rivers that are as clear as a bathtub! My first trip to a Florida Freshwater Spring was in the fall of 2009. I remember it vividly, and I have learned to seek out these spring adventures as often as I can!

Florida is home to the largest collection of freshwater springs in the world, with upwards of 700 springs! Of these, 33 are first-magnitude springs, meaning they pump out at least 64 MILLION gallons of fresh water PER DAY!!! Another 100-200 are second-magnitude springs, discharging between 6.5 million and 64 million gallons of water per day. That’s a lot of water! Temperatures range from 68 to 72 degrees in most springs, making them refreshing in the summer and brisk, but doable, in the bumper seasons!

Below, you will find the perfect three-day itinerary to explore about a dozen of these gorgeous natural wonders in the Northern part of Florida! To note as you plan, summer (and especially summer weekends) can be very crowded. Some of the springs actually get to capacity shortly after opening their gates, as people begin lining up at the entrance before dawn. Plan accordingly!

Day 1: Ichetucknee Springs State Park

Today is for exploring the first Florida spring that I ever went to, the Ichetucknee! Located in a State Park with two entrances, you will have the opportunity to explore both… But first, breakfast!  Head to Alice’s Parkside Restaurant in High Springs for a hearty and filling breakfast. While you can’t go wrong with any of their breakfast options, the biscuits and gravy are the standout here!

After breakfast, pack a cooler with sandwiches and drinks (as Floridians, we are partial to the “Pub Sub”, aka Publix Sub). As you head towards the South Entrance of the Ichetucknee Springs State Park, you will see several tube rental businesses. We always bring our own tubes, but if you haven’t previously purchased them, you can rent from a business outside of the park or you can rent inside the park. Inside is a bit more expensive, but also more convenient. A quick note on fees – there is a fee to enter the park, a tube rental fee, and a fee for the tram ride. Be sure to take cash.

Ichetucknee Tram Shuttle

Once you’re in and have your tube and tram fees taken care of, it’s time to hit the water! Apply sunscreen liberally, the Florida sun is brutal! No food, alcohol, or disposable products are allowed on the water. We usually opt for a Nalgene bottle or two of water inside of a mesh backpack. Take some string to tie your tubes together and make a family/friend flotilla! Other things that we like to wear/take include sturdy soled sandals (like Chacos) that are good for a short walk over bumpy terrain and can stay on in the water, a mask and snorkel to get an up close look at this underwater world, and a hat and sunglasses. Follow the markers to the tram and load up. The tram will transport you and your tube to the mid-point launch, where you will follow a trail to the entry dock on the river.

Ichetucknee Boardwalk

Brace yourself for the shock of the cool water, even on the hottest of days! Once you’re on the water, relax and float! Enjoy the amazing beauty of this natural “lazy river.” Water levels and speed will determine how long your float is. If you have problems on the river, exit at Dampier’s Landing and it’s a quick walk back to your vehicle. Otherwise, continue past it to the last take-out, where you will deposit your rental tube onto the appropriate pile and board the tram for a ride back to the main concessions area.

Ichetucknee Family Floating

If you’ve packed lunch, it’s time to pull that out! There are plenty of picnic tables around the park that you can relax in the shade and chow down! If you haven’t packed lunch, there is a food concession that has typical quick food – burgers, hot dogs, and the like. After lunch, head to the North Entrance of the State Park and explore where the Ichetucknee forms!

Once you exit your car, you will see a path and a large freshwater swimming hole, the Ichetucknee Head Spring. This Spring head has been built up with some concrete stairs and walls, and it’s a great area to cool off, float, and relax. Once you’ve taken a quick dip and if you’re feeling adventurous, grab your mask and snorkel and find the trail to the Blue Hole Spring Vent. This quarter-mile trail will lead you through a hardwood forest to a Florida wonder! Don your mask and snorkel and take the plunge into this 72 degree water! As you explore the underwater world, be sure to check out the entrance to the cave that is created by this spring — it starts at about 40 feet underwater and traverses the limestone some 600+ feet through a maze of passages. If you’re cave diving certified, you can explore this area with your scuba gear between October and March.

After a full day on the water, it’s time to clean up and head out for dinner! We love to frequent Bev’s Burger Cafe. I will confess, though, I have never actually had a burger from Bev’s — we all LOVE their BBQ! They have amazing sliced pork or beef sandwiches, smoked in house and perfect!! That being said, though, the burgers also get dozens of rave reviews — maybe I need to veer away from my norm next time I’m there and have a burger!!!

After dinner, you’ll likely be tired, full, and content! Head back to your lodging, relax for the evening, and prepare for a slightly different water adventure for tomorrow!!!

Day 2: Paddle the Santa Fe River, including Poe Springs, Rum Island and Ginnie Springs!

A short drive away in Alachua, Brown’s Country Buffet is worth the drive and is an amazing place to start your day! They offer a breakfast menu or a small breakfast buffet. You can’t go wrong with either option, and you will be served up some of the best southern cooking that you’ve ever had! The staff is warm and friendly and the prices are very reasonable. I have heard people comment that they drive an hour or more to enjoy this breakfast spot!

After breakfast, make a bee-line to Rum 138 in High Springs (make reservations in advance). Rent a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, depending on your level of comfort, and get ready for a fun day on the river! Be sure to bring a cooler with some food and drinks, as this will be a 5-ish hour paddle, depending on water level and stops.

Rum 138 will shuttle you and your paddlecraft to the SR-27 bridge, where you will begin, and you’ll paddle/float to the SR-47 bridge. Along the way, you will be mainly paddling on the Santa Fe River, a dark tea colored river. The coloring is caused by the tannic acid that is released from the roots of the cypress trees along the banks. This “stained” water mixes with millions of gallons of crystal clear spring water as you travel the river, creating a cool effect when the sun shines through!

On this stretch of river, there are over 20 springs for you to stop and explore! Be sure to allow plenty of time for that, but also be aware that many of the larger springs will charge you to use their on-land facilities, so take a few dollars for that, just in case. Even without paying to go into the parks, though, you can still paddle into the springs and swim/float near your boat and enjoy the springs this way.

We love to go “spring hunting” along the Santa Fe — keeping our eyes peeled for the crystal clear water that signifies a spring flowing into the river! Major springs that you’ll pass include Poe Springs, Rum Island Spring, and Ginnie Springs. If it’s a weekend, expect Ginnie to be overflowing with people — on the water, in the springs, on the shorelines, and in the trees! We prefer to find the quieter and less trafficked springs for a bit of quiet and solitude on our adventures, so we paddle through this stretch as quickly as possible!

After a full day of paddling, swimming, floating, and relaxing, it’s time to grab some dinner and call it a night! Head to High Springs Brewing Company in Downtown High Springs for a fun and relaxing evening! They have food trucks on site most evenings as well as live music Thursday through Saturday; check their Facebook page for the most up to date info! High Springs Brewing is closed on Sunday, however, so plan accordingly.

Day 3: Cedar Lakes Woods & Gardens and Devils Den Springs

Pack up and set your GPS for Sister’s Place in Williston for a late breakfast. The food is delicious, the service is friendly, and they have a cute farm theme inside. The staff and owner go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is always a welcome touch!

With bellies full, head over to Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens for a mid-morning stroll! Garden admission includes a brief description and history as well as a self-guided tour through 20 acres of botanical gardens. As you walk along the paths of the Japanese-style gardens, you will marvel at the beautiful scenery — new plants, flowers, and trees to discover around every bend! Plan about two hours to walk the gardens.

Once you’ve explored Cedar Lakes, hop right next door to the Devil’s Den Prehistoric Spring. Throw on your swimsuit and grab your mask & snorkel to prepare for this other-worldly experience! Descending the narrow stairs into this underground “room,” you will have your first glimpse of this natural wonder! A portion of the roof has collapsed, allowing light to flow in and illuminate the crystal waters below. Snorkeling or diving are the only ways to experience this attraction, and reservations are required (check the website linked above for more info).

Once you gain entry to the water, you may glimpse all manner of underwater life and maybe even find some fossils! This site is home to fossil beds dating back over 33 million years! As a popular cave diving location, you may be enjoying peering at an underwater formation and suddenly notice a light ascending from the darkness of the cave! While this site lacks an abundance of wildlife, it makes up for it in “cool factor” — You are swimming in a pool… in a cave!

One last stop for a quick lunch, then it’s back on the road and time to head home!

That wraps up the perfect three days in Northern Florida exploring some magnificent springs! Please head over to our Facebook page, like it, and follow along on our adventures, which will help you to plan your adventures!!!! Happy Trails!!!

Looking for the Perfect Campground in the Florida Keys? https://leskoexplore.com/looking-for-the-perfect-campground-in-the-florida-keys/ Fri, 15 Oct 2021 13:40:05 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=447 Our first trip, after we were married, was a tent camping trip along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Since that time, we have looked for places that we could tent or RV camp to make the most of our time in a location! We love Keys camping for the unique campground community, the beautiful views, and the money savings over island hotels.

Do you love camping, but think the Florida Keys are too developed for you to camp your way through? The Keys offer something for every camper, from luxury RV resorts to State Parks with tons of outdoor activities. No matter if you travel with a camper or a tent, you will experience amazing sunrises or sunsets, depending on which side of the islands you’re on.

Below are our top picks for both RV and tenting options in the Florida Keys!

Keys Palms Luxury RV Resort

Key Palms RV Site

Located at MM104 Bayside, Keys Palms Luxury RV Resort has our favorite RV sites in Key Largo! With only 30 sites, this small park is a bit more expensive than others in the area, but their amenities more than make up for it. Sites include full hook-ups of electric, water, sewer, and cable. They have a heated pool and spa, dog park, Wi-Fi, laundry, gym, and waterfront sites. Sites are separated by beautiful landscaping. The sandy point makes a perfect place to relax and sunbathe during the day and to enjoy the famous Keys Sunsets in the evening. This quiet park is great for anyone looking for a calm, quiet place to park and enjoy the Keys Lifestyle!

Curry Hammock State Park

Almost half way down the Keys, Curry Hammock State Park is located on Little Crawl Key (MM56 Oceanside) and has 28 sites within view of the Atlantic Ocean available for tents and RVs. Each site has electric & water hook-ups as well as a picnic table and charcoal grill. Showers and bathrooms are well kept. This park is gorgeous, space sizes are generous, and the sunrises are unrivaled! There’s a beach area that’s popular with kite surfers and kayak / bicycle / snorkel rentals during the day. Leashed pets are welcome in your campsite, but not on the beaches. Book early — since the state park rates are better than any private park, they tend to book up early!

Coconut Cay RV Resort

Coconut Cay RV Resort

Newly opened Coconut Cay RV Resort at MM51 Bayside in Marathon provides 25 sites with electric, water, and sewer hook-ups. Sites back up to mangroves, so these sites are not considered waterfront, however, opening your awning towards the mangroves gives you a secluded feeling to your outdoor space. This property has ample space at each site, a pool, boat dockage, laundry/shower facilities and a private sunset point with an AMAZING sunset view!!! Snorkeling can also be done off of this point, offering views of patch coral, sea grass beds, mangrove habitats, sponge gardens, and various sea life. This resort is a great option if you’re looking for a jumping off point in the middle of the keys to do day trips up and down the keys.

Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge (BPKFL)

Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge firepit

Located on the water at MM33 Oceanside on Big Pine Key, Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge is a treat to stay at! Our favorite family-friendly location in the Keys, they offer 97 full hook-up (FHU) RV sites, 72 rustic sites, and a motel. 19 of the FHU sites have adjacent boat slips available for an additional charge (not all sites are waterfront). This place has so much going for it — it’s waterfront, with a heated pool, boat ramp, laundry facilities, clean bathrooms, hot showers, amazing views, billiards, shuffleboard, fish cleaning station, and a camp store! The atmosphere is friendly and inviting and the campground offers nightly campfires, complete with s’mores and limbo! You may also get a visit from an endangered Key Deer right at your site!

Bahia Honda State Park

Book early and prepare to be wowed at Bahia Honda State Park! Offering both RV and tent sites, they tend to book up at least 6 months in advance. There are 3 camping areas with 80 total campsites (As of 7/2021, 57 sites are available as 23 are still closed due to damage from Hurricane Irma). There are also 5 cabins that can accommodate up to 6 people per cabin. RV sites are gravel and have electric and water hook-ups. 8 Bayside tent only sites have no water/power, but are situated around a basin that’s great for fishing! Park amenities are amazing! Snorkel right from shore or take a boat trip to Looe Key Reef! There are also several beaches, historical walking trails (the old RR bridge is right in the park), kayak rentals, 2 boat ramps and a 19-slip marina, biking, fishing, and a nature center.

Boyd’s Key West Campground

Boyds Campground

Boyd’s Key West Campground, located on Stock Island, is the closest campground to Key West. This campground is welcoming, fun, and family-friendly (including your four-legged family members). They offer 32 tent only sites and 163 RV sites, some waterfront, as well as a pool and boat ramp. The campground is clean and well maintained with clean and well stocked facilities. They have kayak and paddleboard rentals on site. There’s even a food truck that offers breakfast and a camp store in case you forgot anything! This is a great value for a Key West Vacation and one that your kids will remember!

Go Off Grid in the Dry Tortugas!!!

Are you looking for a bucket list type of camping adventure? The Dry Tortugas National Park will check that box! They offer tent camping only (or you can stay on a boat in the harbor if you have one big enough to get there!). Campers usually have to plan months to YEARS in advance for this trip, but the outcome is worth it!

Camping at the Dry Tortugas is unlike camping anywhere else! You are 70 miles west of Key West, in the middle of the Caribbean, with almost no manmade light. The amateur astronomy and nighttime photography are breathtaking! Snorkeling around the Fort, in these federally protected waters, can yield some amazing discoveries of fish, corals, sponges, and even Civil War relics! The history of the Fort is surprising and eerie. If you brought a kayak, you can even travel to some of the other keys surrounding Fort Jefferson, weather permitting.

Dry Tortugas National Park Inside Fort

There are two main ways to get to the Dry Tortugas, via a fast ferry, the Yankee Freedom, that operates daily, or via a seaplane. The seaplane only offers day trips at this time. The fast ferry can transport up to 10 campers per day (and their gear). You can stay for up to 4 days (3 nights) on the island, and we definitely recommend that you make a full 4 day reservation, if your schedule and the ferry itinerary allow. Details on the amount and recommended type of gear is on the Yankee Freedom’s website, as well as a host of helpful information.

There are few facilities at this “campground.” Your site will have a picnic table and a fire ring. It will be assigned when you arrive on the island. You can bring charcoal to cook over, but cannot use wood to make an open fire (If traveling via ferry, you also cannot bring any type of liquid fuels). There is a composting toilet, but no fresh running water (for either drinking or bathing). When the ferry is docked on the island, they have a fresh water rinse that you can utilize, as well as air conditioning to cool off, snacks and ice to purchase, and possibly even electric to charge your devices. You should plan to take everything with you that you will need for your entire camping experience, though — water (drinking and personal hygiene), batteries, food, clothes, and personal items.

How to Choose?!

Bahia Honda State Park waterfront sites

With so many great options for camping in the Keys, how do you choose? Sometimes the easiest way is the path of least resistance! Are you planning your trip within the next few weeks or months? Some of these parks book up months in advance, as mentioned, so if you have a park or two that you definitely want to stay at, check their calendars through the links above or give them a call. You could park hop, giving you the opportunity to experience all that the Florida Keys has to offer, from the kitchy charm of Key Largo, the fishing in Islamorada and the family friendliness of the Middle Keys, to the fun and water activities of the Lower Keys! We are sure that any of these choices will be big winners for your next Florida Keys adventure!!!

3 Perfect Days in Key West https://leskoexplore.com/3-perfect-days-in-key-west/ Fri, 15 Oct 2021 13:26:24 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=435 We first came to Key West in 2010. Since then, we have made dozens trips to this tropical Southernmost Town. Sometimes a quick weekend jaunt, and other times choosing to laze away for weeks on end. We definitely agree with Key West’s motto: “Close to perfect; far from normal.” This quirky city has stolen a piece of our hearts, and we will always venture back to this beautiful place!!

With its laid-back island vibe, Key West is a magical town, where the Caribbean can be experienced while still in the continental US! Key West is just a short flight from anywhere in the southeast, making it perfect long weekend tropical escape!

Want to see it all and do it all? Check out this packed itinerary for a sampling of the best of Key West!

Day 1: Around Town Day

Key West is not large, and there are a few great ways to explore! We prefer to rent bikes and take a leisurely ride around the island! Be sure to make your first stop one of the many great breakfast spots on the island! If you like lobster, try the lobster benedict or lobster omelet at Blue Heaven. My favorite breakfast there, though, is the Beef Tenderloin Benedict wtih Key Lime Hollindaise and some asparagus added! Save room for dessert, their Key Lime Pie is consistently rated as one of the best!

Bikes parked after adventure

There are a few directions your day can take from breakfast — if you like History, you could spend some time exploring The Hemmingway Home & Museum and the Lighthouse (OMG, the views!!!), or the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House. You could also opt for the Conch Train Tour, which takes you around town and does a mobile history lesson of sorts. These all offer some really cool glimpses into Old Key West!

Key West Lighthouse

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, check out Moondog Café & Bakery – this is a great place to take a break mid-day. We usually opt for pizzas and dessert here! After lunch, either continue your history hopping or head to the southernmost point for your obligatory Key West Buoy Picture! From there, you could sneak back along Duval Street, checking out the artists shops along the way and people watching.

Alternately, you can do the time-honored tradition of “The Duval Crawl”, starting at one end of Duval Street and making your way down the street, stopping at [most of] the bars between one end and the other, if you can make it! Upside of this option, bragging rights! Downside, you may not remember your day! Don’t forget to grab some lunch — just a block off of Duval, Moondog is still a great lunch option!

The Sunset Festival in Mallory Square is a festival in the truest sense of the word! There are street performers, artisans, vendors of food and wares, tourists, chickens, and cats! The excitement in the air is palpable. As the sun dips towards the horizon, everything stops — the music, the performers — and a hush falls over the crowd. The sunset is the main attraction every night. Take it in, breathe deeply, it’s a magical time of day. After the sunset, the performers all do one more show, then you can start the next part of your evening (Key West doesn’t sleep!)

Key West sunset festival performer

For dinner, head to Eaton Street Seafood Market for amazing Stone Crab Claws (if they’re in season) or a lobster roll if they’re not! Order inside the Seafood Market, right at the coolers, and sit outside under an awning, enjoying your bounty of the sea! After dinner, if you have room (save room!), head to Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe and get your fill of Key Lime Desserts! Walk along the waterfront and check out all of the boats!

Day 2: Get on the Water!

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day — the breakfast club, too, at the Historic Seaport, is worth getting out of bed early for! This open air restaurant is popular enough to warrant a wait during peak breakfast hours. Be ready to carb load here! Popular dishes include pancake charcuterie boards, stuffed french toast, and waffles! If you’re still looking for your seafood fill, the shrimp and grits or the lobster bennie will do the job! Of course, Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas are always popular to wash everything down.

Choose a full-day water-based adventure with one of the many outfitters on the island. We recommend Danger Charters Full Day Sail, Snorkel, Kayak trip or the Fury’s Ultimate Adventure H2.0. Guests have a bit more room to spread out on Danger’s trips. Lunch and drinks are included with both.

After a day on the water, you might not be up for too exciting of a night. Grab some tacos at Garbo’s Grill and a drink from inside at Hanks Hair of the Dog Saloon. Garbo’s is a food truck in the back yard of Hanks! Trust us, it’s worth it; these aren’t your average tacos!!! Relax and decide if it’s time to call it a night. If not, check out some music — maybe Green Parrot, Sloppy Joe’s Bar, or Irish Kevin’s. Walk around Key West after dark and the music will find you!

Day 3: Beach Day!

You’re on an island, relax mon! It’s true that the Keys are not known for their beaches, but there are still some fun spots to spend some time on the island! Start your day at Ana’s Cafe & Southernmost Grocery. This cuban cafe has a wrap around porch with an extensive menu — we opt for bacon, egg, & cheese sandwiches on cuban bread and a pair of cafe con leche! Order at the counter, relax on the porch, and watch the roosters start their day. Grab some sandwiches from here to throw in the cooler for lunch later!

After breakfast, head towards Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. On the way there, be sure to stop in the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center. Informational, educational, and fun – this is a great quick stop (and it’s free!). Once inside Ft Zach State Park, choose to either head straight for the beach, or do a self-guided tour of the fort. Either way, check out the fort at some point during the day! We always choose the first beach entrance at the beach, where we have a little more space to spread out, set up hammocks, and chill. The shoreline is rocky, so bring appropriate footwear. If you didn’t pack sandwiches, you can get some grub at the grill that’s just down the beach. There’s also chair and umbrella rentals there as well as an informational display from Mote Marine — they constructed a snorkel trail located just offshore if you’re feeling adventurous!

For an early dinner, check out Santiago’s Bodega for some sangria and tapas on happy hour! We always opt for a pitcher of red sangria and the cheeseboard, as well as whatever treats they happen to have on their happy hour menu at the time!

For your last evening in Key West, you need to experience the Sunset from a different vantage point — from a sailboat! We heartily recommend the Schooner America 2.0 for a beautiful, premium sailing experience! This historic ship is stunning and the perfect place to spend a few hours watching the sun dip below the horizon. Your sailing experience includes beer, wine, and champagne to enjoy, as well as a nice selection of munchies including a cheese tray, veggies, and shrimp. If you’re lucky, the captain may even let you steer the boat!!!

3 Perfect Days on the Space Coast / Cocoa Beach https://leskoexplore.com/3-perfect-days-on-the-space-coast-cocoa-beach/ Sat, 02 Oct 2021 23:47:20 +0000 https://leskoexplore.com/?p=443 Having lived and traveled all over the US, we have come back to the Space Coast time and again. We even elected to live there for a time! This has given us some great insight into the area from a locals perspective, while still looking at this beautiful part of Florida from a tourist’s perspective.

Cocoa Beach and the surrounding areas exploded in the 1960’s when NASA came to town. Today, the area is a mix of small town surf culture, space junkies, and nature lovers. Located less than an hour from the Orlando International Airport (MCO), the Space Coast is the ideal place to spend a long weekend exploring!

This three-day itinerary is the perfect combination of all that the area has to offer!

Day 1: Cocoa Beach – Beach Day & Kayaking with Fin Expeditions!

You’re at the Beach!!! Plan at least one day to hang on World Famous Cocoa Beach! Rent surfboards and water toys at Ron Jon Rentals, or just plop down your chair, put up your umbrella, and enjoy the crashing waves! Visitors usually choose either the Cocoa Beach Pier area, Alan Shepherd Park, Lori Wilson Park, or Downtown Cocoa Beach. Of these, only Lori Wilson offers free parking. Don’t disregard the parking signs and meters at the other locations, or you will come back to find your vehicle gone!!!

Our favorite beach spot is 2nd Street South. It’s a block from the craziness of the downtown beach, but close enough to enjoy all of the amenities that Cocoa Beach has to offer! Start your day with a coffee and breakfast sandwich from Juice and Java Café, then head to the beach to set up for the day. Spend the morning walking the beach (south for peace and solitude, north for people watching). Be sure to look for tracks from turtles that may have pulled themselves into the dunes the night prior to lay their eggs! For lunch, take a quick walk to The Tiny Turtle for the best tacos at the beach! After lunch, grab an ice cream from The Fat Donkey (you’ll thank me later). Spend some time checking out the art shops downtown as you stroll, then head back to the beach for the afternoon to soak up the sand and sun.

When you’ve reached that perfect golden brown, it’s time to head back to your hotel and get ready for the evening! Notable dinner spots include Long Doggers (laid back and kid friendly) or Florida’s Fresh Grill in the Publix Plaza (this is a great date-night type of spot!)

The perfect end to your first night in Cocoa Beach is a kayaking trip through the 1000 Islands Conservation Area! Depending on the time of year, you can choose a sunset tour or a bioluminescence tour. The lagoon in Cocoa Beach is not only home to a remarkable amount of wildlife, from fish, rays, crabs, sharks, dolphins, and manatees, but it also has amazing bioluminescence (the water literally lights up as you paddle through it!!!!) Fin Expeditions does tours nightly and we highly recommend them!

Day 2: NASA’s Kennedy Space Center & Playalinda Brix Project

Start your day with breakfast at Sunrise Diner in Cocoa Beach. This is an old-school, small-town diner, with great coffee, great food, and a friendly owner and staff! Next, get ready to nerd out at Kennedy Space Center! Located about 30 minutes north of Cocoa Beach on 144,000 acres, KSC is NASA’s primary launch center of human spaceflight! You can learn about past missions, see the actual Space Shuttle Atlantis and Saturn V, check out simulators, see what NASA is doing now — including building the SLS Rocket and finding ways to live and work on Mars — and maybe meet an astronaut! If you’re lucky, there may be a launch scheduled while you’re on the Space Coast; click here to find out!

Before you head back to your hotel, head to Playalinda Brix Project for a great dinner and craft-beer selection (they make all of their beers in Titusville). Favorites are the Irish nachos, steak fajita flatbread, rib roast sandwich, and mahi platter. Be sure to check out their building and furnishings – a former lumberyard that they converted to the brewery. Many of the building supplies used in renovations were salvaged from the original building and repurposed to what you see today! A quick note, Brix is both kid and pet friendly!

Day 3: Breakfast at Backwater, Brevard Zoo & Historic Cocoa Village

Whether a kid or a kid at heart, the Brevard Zoo is amazing! Start your day with breakfast at Backwater in Downtown Melbourne. Make pancakes with any number of additions (chocolate chips, fruit, sprinkles, Oreo crumbles, cotton candy, cookie dough) on a built-in flat top right at your table! Or you can choose one of our favorites from the regular menu; Shrimp and Grits, Okeechobee Ice Cream, or The Breakfast Club, and don’t forget a side of Gator Gumbo! They locally source as much of their food as they can, and they support several local non-profits. They also have killer mimosas if you’re feeling like treating yourself!

Now it’s time for the zoo!!!! The Brevard Zoo is currently requiring reservations for timed entries, so be sure to check on that before you head over. They are home to animals from all over the world and have tons of ways to interact with them, from feeding Giraffes, Lorikeets and Cockatiels, to walking through an open kangaroo habitat! This is so cool! The zoo also has several unique and exciting experiences in addition to exploring the actual zoo… You can kayak through animal habitats or climb high above them on a ropes course that runs through the park! In addition to what you can see and do there, the zoo also plants oyster mats in the Indian River Lagoon to help restore the health of the lagoon, rescues sick and injured sea turtles, and has monitoring programs for several critically-endangered animals.

After a day at the zoo, it’s time to head back to the hotel to freshen up then head out for an evening in Historic Cocoa Village! If you’re looking for a laid-back and delicious dinner, head to Crydermans Barbecue for the best barbeque on the Space Coast! Their seating is all outside at large picnic tables. Want another option? Milpa Tacos y Tortillas has fabulous, scratch made mexican food! We have loved everything we’ve tried there, and drool for the Chicken Mole. If you have kids with you, check out REC 225 for a fun dining and game night. If you don’t have the kids along, stop in Bugnutty Brewing Company for a locally crafted beer (the owners are former NASA employees!) and stop at Stumpy’s Hatchet House to show off your slaying abilities!!! Stroll along the waterfront as the sun sets on another amazing day!

That wraps up the perfect three days on the Space Coast! Was this itinerary spot on? Please head over to our Facebook page, like it, and follow along on our adventures, which will help you to plan your adventures!!!!
